Last time we used melons was in episode 95 - Trojan Horses Demystified: labratsonline.com/ep95.
EDGE ran on GSM phones, which tun on most the world's cellular networks.
EV-DO ran on CDMA phones, which many North American networks use.
HSPA/HSDPA = High-Speed Packet Access. Data network access technology for GSM phones. You might also hear HSUPA, or High-Speed Uplink Packet Access. It's incrementally better than HSDPA with less lag/latency.
iPhone 3G introduced data connections using EDGE at 384 kbps, and HSPA at 3.6 Mbps.
HSDPA is actually a subset of HSPA so I should say HSPA+ here not HSDPA+.
Many parts of the world outside of Canada and the United States are already there at HSPA 21 Mbps.
LTE = Long Term Evolution.

My little town, Visby, Sweden, got 4G this summer as the third location in the world! (after Stockholm ans Oslo).
The roaming/handover capabilities in 4G I'd say is the most interesting difference from 3G. Making seamless jumps from LTE-A to Wi-Fi to WiMAX can really make existing infrastructure more effective!
