A program capable of browsing the Internet or, less commonly, files on a computer. Most of the time the term browser refers to any program that allows you to navigate between web pages on the Net. One of the oldest and most successful browsers is Microsoft's Internet Explorer. This is largely due to the fact that it ships with Windows (it is, in fact, built in to the OS) and that Windows is still the most widely used desktop OS. There are a variety of other browsers, however. Apple computers use Safari as their default browser and both Google's Chrome and Mozilla's Firefox have gained significant popularity. Modern browsers also incorporate plug-ins and add-ons to expand their abilities, change their visuals or alter the overall user interface.
