Nokia and Microsoft's relationship hits some chop

Microsoft and Nokia are going to be going through an interesting phase of their relationship, for a number of reasons. This is primarily due to the fact that Windows Phone Mango edition has started to roll out to customers as of this week. It's also because Nokia devices running Mango will begin to hit the market soon. But it's really because many people are only now starting to hear about Meltemi, Nokia's proprietary mobile platform, which will henceforth be refered to as "the other woman."

Like many other media outlets and industry watchers out there, we at butterscotch.com were fairly certain that when Nokia decided to ditch its two girlfriends, Symbian and MeeGo, to go steady with Windows Phone, they weren't going to be in an open relationship. It turns out that's not the case and Nokia's been keeping plans close to the chest about how to broach the subject of this mysterious Meltemi.

Meltemi, we should have you know, is alluring for being mysterious, Linux-based, controversial and named after the Greek word for the southerly winds that blow over the Aegean sea in the summer. That's right, Linux-based.

While Meltemi's plans with Nokia only involve hanging out on low-end smartphones and feature phones -- Microsoft's Windows Phone will still be the sparkly arm candy at swanky joints -- it's still unknown what the long-term gameplan is here. Since Nokia's close friend and executive vice president of mobile phones, Mary McDowell, introduced Meltemi to Nokia, it's likely that they're going to hit it off fairly well.

It's hard to argue that Nokia wasn't going through a somewhat dark period before hooking up with Microsoft and the two have certainly been under constant scrutiny by the media. But we say that there may very well be many good years down the road; stay together for the kids.

(See if you can catch Nokia CEO Stephen Elop's Meltemi reference in the video above)
