It's official! Apple announces the new iPhone 4S

Were you hoping for an all-new iPhone 5 today? Unfortunately, it's not gonna happen. Apple execs just wrapped up their Let's Talk iPhone event where, as expected, only a refreshed iPhone 4 branded the "iPhone 4S" was unveiled.
As you can see from the image above, the device is largely unchanged in terms of its physical design. The new additions include mostly slightly upgraded hardware and a new Siri personal assistant feature. We will cover the voice controlled assistant feature in depth shortly, but first here's everything you need to know from the event.
What you need to know
The good news is on top of all the features rumored to be included in the iPhone 4S, Apple also shed some light on a few pleasant surprises that make this refreshed iPhone quite enticing. If you remember the iPhone 3GS as an incremental update to the 3G, the 4S is much the same in comparison to the iPhone 4.
A5 Chip and Graphics:
As expected, the iPhone 4S includes Apple's own A5 chip which accounts for up to two times faster CPU performance than the previous iPhone. Graphics have also been given a boost with dual-core graphics up to seven times faster than the iPhone 4.
Camera System:
A brand new camera system is arguably the biggest hardware upgrade to the device with a new five lens, 8-megapixel system with 60 per cent more pixels than the previous iPhone. The device also includes a hybrid IR filter, and provides auto-white balance and face detection. The camera will also apparently be a lot quicker allowing you to snap a photo within 1.1 seconds and another a half a second later.
As Apple's Phil Schiller puts it:
“I don’t know what Droid Bionic customers have to do between taking pictures… like, go get coffee.”
New antenna:
After the antenna issues the iPhone 4 experienced, Apple has included a redesigned wireless system. Phil Schiller explains:
“Second — the wireless system. As you know we revolutionized with these steel bands on the outside of the phone. We’ve done something technically amazing. It can now intelligently switch between the antennas for even better call quality.”
The iPhone 4S is also capable of downloading data at a theoretical 14.4Mbps(HSDPA).
Availability:
GSM and CDMA compatible. Coming to AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. Pre-orders start October 7th, with a public release on the 14th in US, Canada, Australia, the UK, France, Germany and Japan. By October 28th 22 more countries will be added with plans for over 70 countries by the end of 2012.
Pricing:
The iPhone 4S will be available in three models. 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, and 64GB for $399.
