Oops! We have some errors...

Using Ubuntu 10.04 I use compiz tp place specific application in specific workspaces. It works fine except when I put these applications in Starup Applications. Then the all open in workspace 1. Seems like they load before compiz.

Personally, Compiz has some neat 'Eye Candy' if you will, however it can cause more troubles than being of use, in my humble view point. You might actually consider removing it. To do that launch a terminal window and type:
sudo apt-get remove compiz
(press the enter/return key and enter your password press the enter/return key)
then type:
sudo apt-get remove compiz-core
(press the enter/return key and enter your password press the enter/return key then follow the prompt to approve).
