AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is one of Tucows' most popular downloads because it's easy to install and use, it does an excellent job detecting and removing malware, viruses and trojans, and the company provides excellent technical support.
Another popular download is Avira AntiVir Personal. Either or both of these programs would work well in conjunction with this free tool, CCleaner, which cleans up your registry, unused files and Internet history.

Another great option to consider is ClamWin Anti-Virus used in combination with Clam Sentinel real-time scanner which uses ClamWin to scan files.
Personally I found AVG getting 'bloated' if you will.
