Backing up your contacts can be done a couple of ways. Since Android phones default to Gmail, if you use Gmail your contacts are automatically synced. You can check by tapping on Settings and then on Accounts & sync. If your Gmail account is selected then all your contacts are being synced and backed up. Verizon Wireless also has a Backup Assistant that will backup your contacts and other things. If you don't use Gmail and don't use Backup Assistant there are some free programs in the Android Market that will backup your contacts.
