Some of our favorite features of Android:
- Wireless hotspot in Android 2.2 (Froyo) and later. Turns your phone into a wireless hotspot so you can connect laptops, tablets or any other Wi-Fi device.
- Widgets on homescreens. Rather than having to tap to go into an app in order to see what's on your to-do list for today, you can put your to-do list right on your homescreen. Many apps have widgets that you can optionally place on one of the five homescreens. Facebook, Twitter, calendars, student timetable, weather etc. etc.
- Open source foundation: Apple, currently Android's closest competitor and the smartphone front-runner, has a very closed system. With Android, you're able to install a modified version of the Android operating system. While Android doesn't have as many apps as the iPhone (140,000 vs. about 320,000) it has a much more liberal policy as to what is allowed into the Android Market. Apple is infamous for rejecting applications without giving developers any good reason.
- Choice: Unlike the iPhone where what you see is what you get, Android users have a much wider choice of handsets from a wide variety of manufacturers. You can get a QWERTY keyboard, a touch screen or both. A 3-inch, 4-inch or even 5- plus-inch screen. A large phone or a tiny phone and so on.
What we don't like:
- Recently, Android was hit with some malware in the Android Market. As many as 200,000 people downloaded one of the about 50 infected apps. These apps were removed very quickly once the Android team became aware and the security holes have since been patched.
- Fragmentation. While choice is a good thing, there's also a down side. Manufacturers will sometimes modify the Android operating system. This means that when Google pushed out an Android update, your phone may not be able to use it. Instead, you're waiting on the manufacturer to adapt the update to work on your phone, with their little tweaks intact.
