Additional Details:
I currently have fonts in Word and in my Control Panel in Windows 7. I also google free fonts. Would like a free or low cost app where I can put all fonts, preferably open type fonts, into one place that I could then try out with different text. Is this Fontbook? Thanks so much!

I've never used Fontbook, personally, but I m a fellow font collector and I'm addicted to this freeware I'd like to recommend called AMP Font Viewer. It shows not only your installed fonts, but also any you have stored outside of your main font folder. If you find a font you like, it allows you to install directly from it's interface (and uninstall as well). It's a powerful font manager that supports TrueType, OpenType and Type 1 fonts. You can change the sample text so you can see how it will look, which is one of your requests. It also allows you to categorize your fonts, which I find particularly useful.
