Cladding high tech gear in old school style the

Etch A Sketch cases

are officially licensed and add some serious retro cachet to your new school devices. These cases come in configurations for current iDevices, the iPad, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4th generation. They may not be terribly easy to take on or off which is a pain as they can also be a bit of a dock block (to coin a phrase), but they definitely stand out in a crowd.

Made of impact resistant plastic, the Etch A Sketch line from Headcase clad your iDevice in a hard shell for protection. No screen protection is included... however, the Apple camp will insist such a thing is not necessary. Indeed, cheap-o plastic screen covers should never besmirch That Which Apple Built.

Device protection
These cases offer protection from dings and scratches on the covered surfaces. Specifically, the bezel, top and sides and back of the devices they're covering. However, as it's a rigid plastic shell, most of the impact from a drop, for example, will be transferred directly to the device it's holding.

Ports and switches
All the ports and switches are easily accessible through cut-outs in the Etch A Sketch case. This includes the all important 30-pin connector port. The Home button is a little more recessed than we'd like, meaning you have to aim as opposed to just hitting the button. A small concern.

Dock block
With the iPad case, the hard plastic shell extends several millimetres beyond the 30-pin connector port. That means that, unless such margins were built into the dock you want to use (hint: they probably weren't) you'll have to remove the iPad to dock. That's kind of a big deal, as the case is a real PITA to remove and requires that you have some loose change on you (use a coin to twist in a groove to snap the case apart.)

The iPhone case fares a little better as iPhone docks tend to accept multiple different iDevices, including iPods and iPod Classic. This gives the wiggle room necessary to mate the device with many docks on the market.
