If you've taken a photo with your smartphone, there's a good chance you've revealed more about yourself than you intended, thanks to the inclusion of GPS in modern phones. Sean and Andy take a look at how photos are "geotagged" with your location, show how to get the information, and talk about how you can turn it off on your phone, if you want.

Geotagging: Applying location data (GPS coordinates) to photographs such that you know exactly where in the world they were taken.

For a more detailed explanation of GPS and A-GPS, check out Episode 267 - GPS Explained, 2011 Edition!.

GPS + camera = geotagging The inverse square of geotagging is directly proportional to... uh... we're not sure.

EXIF: Exchangeable Image File Format.

Geotagging is great if you want to catalog your pics according to where they were taken. It's also useful if you want to see all your pics taken in, say, Las Vegas or Buenos Aires or wherever else. It really came into its own with smartphones. With GPS on board and a decent camera (plus the fact that it's always with you wherever you may roam), more and more pics have geotag data available.

Geotagging is not so great though if that location data falls into the wrong hands. If you've got a Flickr stalker or an obsessed ex that wants to know where you live and work, where you go grocery shopping etc., it's a liability.

Geotags are often stripped out when uploaded. You need to make sure that's happening though, or just don't record the geotag info in the EXIF by turning that setting off.

Some services, like Flickr, will let you choose whether or not the geotagged info in your pics is stripped on upload. You'll need to turn geotagging on or off in Flickr according to your preference.

Turn off geotagging on the iPhone by going to Settings >Location Services and setting Location Services On or Off. You can opt to set the option for different apps or turn locations settings off completely.

Inexpensive point and shoot cameras will tend not to have GPS geotagging. Higher end point and shoot and some digitl SLRs will however.
