LG Optimus 3D P920 video review

The LG Optimus 3D P920 has a 4.3-inch touchscreen -- colossal for the category -- capable of displaying images in a pretty impressive glasses-free 3D. Aside from the 3D upgrade though, you've got a powerful smartphone with a dual core 1GHz processor and 1GB of RAM broken into two 512MB channels to cut down on bottlenecks. All in all, the Optimus 3D is a super fast phone, whether you're interested in the 3D elements or not. That said, if 3D holds no interest, you're paying a premium for a feature you'll not use.

LG Optimus 3D P920
$TBD - Likely $650+ without carrier relief.

As the first 3D phone to properly hit the market, the LG Optimus 3D is a solid smartphone, but the 3D elements feel a bit like a work in progress. I first envisioned 3D widgets popping off the screen, 3D app shortcuts hovering in space, and Android homescreens set back from the glass on a carousel. What I got instead was a dedicated 3D button to enter into the 3D view mode. 3D has no impact on the overall phone experience, unless you enter the "3D Launcher" app that the dedicated button takes you into.

LG has stopped short of drastically skinning and altering the Android OS. Instead, they've added a few little features like an always-up dock for four of your most commonly used apps (phone, email, SMS, etc.). That should mean an upgrade path that's relatively free of obstacles.

The real sell for 3D is in the 3D games that come bundled. However, with no apparent way to get at more 3D apps and content yet, what you see is pretty much what you get for the time being. Notably absent is a universal means to control the depth of the 3D effect. 3D depth control happens in-app and must be set each time.

The Optimus 3D has two rear 5MP cameras meaning it's capable of capturing 3D photos and stills. The HDMI out port lets you connect up to your bigscreen 3DTV and share all that you've shot.

The 3D Games section of the 3D showcase gives a hint to the possibilites opened by adding a third dimension to your mobile device's screen. There's a pop-up story book (minus the all-important story part) in the form of Gulliver's Travels along with a few games: Asphalt 3D, Nova 3D and Let's Golf 2.

LG's glasses-free 3D phone uses parallax barrier technology; a physical layer atop the LCD screen that directs two different sets of pixels to your two eyes.
