MAC Address Filtering

MAC Address Filtering - limiting the Mac addresses that can operate on the wireless network.
- The MAC in MAC address filtering stands for Media Access Control.
- MAC Addresses are found on both wired and wireless devices.
- The MAC address consists of six groups of two hexadecimal digits (0-9 and A-F) separated by dashes.
- MAC address filtering can be used to limit access to a small group of specific users to lock out the nuisance users.

Access your Router:
Type in your routers IP address
Click on advance tab
Click on Filtering
Click on MAC Filtering
Type in the MAC ID on your device
Click Apply

- The sticker that lists the MAC address sometimes just has the 12 digits run together in a long bunch.

To Get Your MAC Address Digitally on Windows:
Click on Start
Click Run
Type cmd
Type in ipconfig/all
A list of all network devices on your machines
Your MAC address (physcial address) will be listed
Type exit

- Wired MAC address filtering is not necessary

MAC Address Cloning- allows one device to appear to be another device by copying its MAC address.

NOTE: MAC address cloning is not a permanent process: devices should revert to old MAC address on reboot.

- Legitimate reason: if your ISP binds your service to your PC's MAC address, a broadband router can clone it.
