- @TwitterUsername at the front of a message means that only you, the person the @reply is directed at and people that follow both of you can see the reply.

- Put another word or character before the @TwitterUsername to make your tweet visible to all Twitter users.

- Check out your mentions under the @YourUsername link on the right hand side of the Twitter window.

- Third-party Twitter clients will have a similar feature, often called "direct mentions" or "replies" or "mentions" etc..
