Nintendo 3DS
$249.99
Release date: March 27, 2011
3DS screens:
The 3DS will be available in Aqua Blue (as shown) and Cosmo Black at launch. The top screen is 3D at 800x240 pixels. When in 3D, this means 400 horizontal pixels for each eye. The 3D effect can be adjusted to personal preference by using the 3D depth slider to the right of the 3D top screen. Moving the slider all the way to the bottom turns the 3D effect off. The bottom LCD is touch capable and 320x240 resolution.
3DS control:
The Circle Pad is a full analog control pad and is immediately above the classic D-pad controller on the left of the screen. To the right is the traditional array of four buttons, A, B, X and Y. The lower touch screen also acts as a controller in games. Two shoulder buttons appear on the top of the lower screen portion. The camera, microphone and Motion and Gyro sensors will be used in a variety of games. We saw them in action with the augmented reality games.
Three cameras:
One camera mounted above the top screen inside the 3DS can be used in-game or to take pictures. The two outside cameras are offset from each other and function as a 3D camera.
In the box:
The adjustable stylus docks in the back of the 3DS and telescopes to become longer. A recharging cradle is included, as is a 2GB SD card.
Nintendo 3DS StreetPass:
With the 3DS in sleep mode, passing another 3DS in the street can enact a trade, a battle or a Mii transfer. You don't need to select which games to do battle or trade in; it can be enabled right within the hardware itself so you don't need to have a specific game card in the 3DS to use StreetPass.
Backwards compatible:
The 3DS will accept and play Nintendo DS and DSi games. Obviously, DS games will play in 2D.
