REGISTRY 101:

Windows digital file cabinet.
Keeps control of your settings.
One false move and Windows may not boot.
Make sure System Restore is on and working.

- Good idea to set a restore point prior to editing the registry.
Steps: Start >>> All Programs >>> Accessories >>> System Tool >>> System Restore

Steps to enter the Registry: Start >>> Run >>> regedit

- You can double-click regedit.exe located in C:\WINDOWS but it only accomplishes the same thing.

- HKEY CLASSES ROOT: where the majority of software settings and file assoications are kept.

- HKEY CURRENT USER: where the current logged in user's settings and data is kept.

- HKEY LOCAL MACHINE: where settings for hardware and software.

- If you get Spyware or Viruses most often they will hide in a software folder in the HKEY LOCAL MACHINE.

- HKEY USER: where all users data is kept.

- HKEY CURRENT CONFIG: saves data from the current session.

- HKEY is short for "Hive Key".

- Ideally use a program designed to edit your registry automatically if your system is flakey or you have random blue screens.

- We recommend using one of these programs:

Registry Booster - $29.95 USD

CleanMyPC Registry Cleaner - $29.95 USD

RegSeeker - FREE

- Here are some 15% off coupons that you can use if you are going to purchase the recommended software:
