REGISTRY 101:
Windows digital file cabinet.
Keeps control of your settings.
One false move and Windows may not boot.
Make sure System Restore is on and working.
- Good idea to set a restore point prior to editing the registry.
Steps: Start >>> All Programs >>> Accessories >>> System Tool >>> System Restore

Steps to enter the Registry: Start >>> Run >>> regedit
- You can double-click regedit.exe located in C:\WINDOWS but it only accomplishes the same thing.
- HKEY CLASSES ROOT: where the majority of software settings and file assoications are kept.
- HKEY CURRENT USER: where the current logged in user's settings and data is kept.
- HKEY LOCAL MACHINE: where settings for hardware and software.
- If you get Spyware or Viruses most often they will hide in a software folder in the HKEY LOCAL MACHINE.
- HKEY USER: where all users data is kept.
- HKEY CURRENT CONFIG: saves data from the current session.
- HKEY is short for "Hive Key".
- Ideally use a program designed to edit your registry automatically if your system is flakey or you have random blue screens.
