firmware - enables the basic functionality of the device stored on flash memory.

Most newly-bought 802.11n devices should work together. Old 802.11n devices will most likely be the problem, if you are having one.

Typically, wireless updates appear (as available) when you chose "Software Update" from the Apple menu.
