Samsung Story Station offers simple and attractive storage

If you listen to Joan Rivers, you can never be too rich or too skinny. If you listen to us, you can never have too many USB ports or too much storage. Enter the Samsung Story Station 1TB. This consumer external USB hard drive plugs into an available USB port to offer a quick and easy storage expansion. It's even got software on board for Windows users to

create a hidden portion of the hard drive

,

encrypt all or a portion of the drive

and

password protect a folder or group of folders

. And it looks slick too.

Samsung Story Station 1TB
HX-DU010EB
~$100

What it is: A high-speed USB external hard drive available in 1TB or 1.5TB capacities.

- Works natively with Mac or PC.

- Includes backup, encryption and hidden partition software on the drive (no discs) but the software is PC only.

- SafetyKey: Lets users encrypt and password-protect all or a portion of the hard drive.

- SecretZone: Creates a hidden section where users can hide sensitive files.

- Auto Backup: Offers manual, quick or scheduled backup of your computer to the Story Station drive.

- Connects via the included USB cable; this is the only connection option for the drive. No FireWire or other connections. That said, the USB 2.0 connection allows for 480 MBps transfer. This is a feature not traditionally found in devices at this capacity in this price range.

- Classic look: brushed dark grey aluminum with a simple jog dial on the front. Also has red ringed connection points on the back.

- Front-mounted dial turns the device on or off and controls the intensity of the white LED light.

- 3.5-inch HDD inside.

- Looks like the Story Station is designed to be stackable for expansion. However, there is no apparent means for daisy-chaining multiple drives.
