From 500GB to 3TB, the FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 Seagate GoFlex Desk for Mac features a desktop version of Seagate's interchangeable connector system. The drives work on both Mac OS X and Windows so no worrying about incompatible file systems and the like, though you'll need to download a Windows driver in order to access the drive on a Windows machine. It's fast too, running over FireWire 800. You can boost the speed still by opting for a USB 3.0 dock; FireWire and USB 2.0 are the right choice for most of us until USB 3.0 really starts to make inroads.

Seagate GoFlex Desk for Mac
3 TB
$259.99
Price vs. Performance
We can't speak to the long-term performance and life of this drive. However, we've always found Seagate external portable drives to be of high quality and have yet to have a drive failure. The Desk drives don't get tossed into your bag and carried around town like a portable drive would and generally remain in one place waiting to dock with your laptop and backup / give you access to your full media library.
Seagate GoFlex Desk dock system
The standard bundle includes the Seagate GoFlex dock with USB 2.0 and FireWire 800 connections. An upgrade to USB 3.0 will cost about $40 brining the total price of this drive up to about $300 or $100 per terabyte for a USB 3.0 drive. That's very reasonable.
Software on the GoFlex Desk for Mac
We've always liked Seagate's suite of bundled software on their Windows formatted drives; software to back-up and archive, to share content and to encrypt all or a portion of the drive. GoFlex Desk for Mac doesn't include any such software. Rather, there's a small utility that only lets you turn the activity and storage monitor lights on or off and test the integrity of the drive. With Time Machine included on OS X, a back up utility would be redundant; Time Machine is more than sufficient. However, it would have been nice to get encryption software as part of the deal.
