The ABC of Digital TV

We've been hearing a lot about the

digital TV (DTV) switch-over

in the past few months but many of us are no closer to understanding

what the DTV switch-over actually means

.

Can I still use my rabbit ears antenna to get TV signals?

How much does a decent DTV-capable antenna cost?

Can my TV get digital signals?

Will sitting too close to the digital TV make me go cross-eyed?

All of these questions will be answered in this episode of Lab Rats. Except the last one.

In the U.S. the DTV switch occurred on June 12, 2009.

ATSC = set of standards from the Advanced Television Systems Committee for digital TV transmission.

It gets complicated: In the U.S., HD Ready means it "usually" has an ATSC tuner. Not so in Europe. It gets worse - in some cases, HD compatible means a TV can receive an HD signal, but may not display it at HD resolution.

SAP = Secondary Audio Program.

RCA ANT1400 Multi-Directional Indoor Flat Digital Antenna = $25 US
