- Ping = technically it's designed to see if the other machine is reachable.

  • Microsoft Windows


    • Click the Windows icon [formally known as the Start button.

    • Type "cmd" in the search bar. [alternatively you could go Start, Run, type "cmd", and click Enter]

    • Type "ping" followed by the IP address or a domain name.


  • Apple OSX


    • Open up Spotlight.

    • Type in "terminal".

    • Click on Terminal listed under your Applications in the search results.

    • Type "ping" followed by the IP address or a domain name.



- SONAR = Sound Navigation and Ranging. The sound made by SONAR was...yes, "ping".
- Common Router IP Addresses:

- For example, if numeric IP's respond but domain names [i.e. .com, .net, .org, etc] don't, it's a DNS issue.
- Traceroute = shows the route that each packet leaving your personal computer takes on its way to its destination.

    • Type "tracert" followed by the IP address or domain name and press Enter


  • Apple OSX


    • Open up Spotlight.

    • Type in "terminal".

    • Click on Terminal listed under your Applications in the search results.

    • Type "traceroute" followed by the IP address or domain name and press Enter
