The software keyboard on the iPhone works surprisingly well for bashing out messages. The onscreen keyboard on the iPad lets you write longer missives. If you want to get down to some serious typing though, you'll need a hardware keyboard like the Verbatim Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard for iPad and iPhone.

Verbatim Wireless Keyboard for iPad and iPhone
$104
Small and compact, the Verbatim travels well and once you get used to its unique key layout, works well too. At over $100 though, you money might be better spent on a more versatile but harder to pack Apple Wireless Keyboard at about $70.
A small stand pops out of the back of the device and holds your iPhone (but not the iPad) steady.
All in all, a useful thing to have for anyone using the iPad as a primary computer when travelling, but a tough purchase to justify when compared against the harder to pack but altogether easier to type on Apple Wireless Keyboard or the iPad Keyboard Dock.
