- This episode of LabRats explains how to use networking to share files between Windows Vista and Windows XP.
On Windows Vista:
- (1)Click on Windows logo and type in "Network and Sharing Center".
(2)Click "Customize" and click "Private" which opens up your computer ports to the rest of your network.
(3)Click "Apply" and then "Ok".
On Windows XP:
- Check your Workgroup:
(1)Click "Start" then "Control Panel" and select "System".
(2)Click on the tab named "Computer Name".
(3)Click on "Network ID" and click next.
(4)Select "My computer uses a network without a domain" and click next.
(5)The workgroup name that appears, you want to be the same on all other computers on your network.
(6)Click "Ok".
- Enable "File and Printer Sharing":
(1)Click "Start" then "Control Panel" and select "Network Connections".
(2)Right-click and select "Properties" on the active Internet connection.
(3)Make sure that "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" is selected and turned on.
(4)Click "Ok".
- Disable "Simple File Sharing":
(1)Click "Start" then "All Programs" then "Accessories" and select "Windows Explorer".
(2)On the toolbar select "Tools" and select "Folder Options".
(3)Select the "View" tab and scroll to the bottom.
(4)Uncheck the box for "Use Simple File Sharing" and click "Apply" and then "Ok".
- There's something called "Bonjour" for the Mac side.
- By default, Microsoft workgroups are either WORKGROUP or MSHOME.
- Turn off your software firewall if you have one running.
- Turn off "Simple File Sharing" on Windows XP Professional, but on Windows XP Home a tiny hack must be done; for more information visit http://www.tinyurl.com/39vhnf.
