- The personal computer that we know today is the result of many years of technology progress.
- The abacus is a very early computer of sorts that helped people to perform relatively complex calculations.
- The slide rule is a more recent development with a similar purpose.
- Today's personal computer are possible thanks to the development and refinement of the transistor which replaced the vacuum tubes used in early, room-sized computer.
PCs contain:
- The motherboard
- The central processing unit or CPU
- Memory in the form of random access memory or RAM
- Storage in the form of a hard disk drive (HDD)
- A graphics card
- An optical drive like a CD or DVD reader / writer
- And, of course, software like the operating system
