The Nintendo 3DS isn't the company's first foray into 3D. That honor goes to the dubious and best forgotten Virtual Boy. That said, the 3DS is the first 3D handheld video game system that actually looks like it has a chance. Early adopters or "3DS Ambassadors" as Nintendo likes to call them, shelled out $250. Now, with the price drop to about $180, is it worth buying in?

The LG Optimus 3D P920 has a 4.3-inch touchscreen -- colossal for the category -- capable of displaying images in a pretty impressive glasses-free 3D. Aside from the 3D upgrade though, you've got a powerful smartphone with a dual core 1GHz processor and 1GB of RAM broken into two 512MB channels to cut down on bottlenecks. All in all, the Optimus 3D is a super fast phone, whether you're interested in the 3D elements or not. That said, if 3D holds no interest, you're paying a premium for a feature you'll not use.

The first glasses-free 3D smartphone we've seen thus far at CTIA 2011. The LG Optimus 3D, AKA the AT&T Thrill, offers 3D video including 3D YouTube watching and uploading, 3D games and bunch of other interesting 3D additions to take advantage of the capability. The LG Optimus 3D uses the same glasses-free 3D technology that's used in the Nintendo 3DS which is launching any day now. While the 3D effect is lost on our cameras, it's as impressive as the aforementioned Nintendo handheld.

Since time immemorial, watching 3D has required the use of some kind of glasses. Whether anaglyph (i.e. blue and red) or active shutter, the glasses are what make 3D pop. Sony is trying its hand at glasses-free 3D using a top of the line OLED screen, no less. Andy Walker takes a look.

Until every movie ever is re-released in a 3D version (please, don't do it) or until every made-for-3D movie is, y'know, good (we're waiting), it'll be on the consumer to make their own 3D content. At the Sony booth at CES 2011, Andy finds a 3D camcorder capable of recording home movies in full 3D, the HDR-TD10.

We're not ones for religious debate but we'd argue there are times it's a good idea to be agnostic. Take, for example, these 3D glasses that don't commit themselves to just one 3DTV manufacturer but rather work with just about every 3DTV set going. They're universal 3D glasses. Since you have to pony up for extra pairs of 3D glasses anyway (unless you're selfish or terminally alone) it seems to make sense to buy glasses that are going to work with any 3DTV on the market.

By effectively cramming two 10 MP cameras into one larger than usual camera body, the Fujifilm REAL 3D W1 does a surprisingly good job of rendering 3D images and short video clips in HD. The lenses are slightly offset from each other and are what enables the 3D pics. 3D images and videos really pop on the W1's rear monitor. With an HDMI cable and a 3D capable TV, you can view your 3D images and videos on the big screen too.

3D gaming solutions have traditionally faltered. Often, this is because game developers need to specifically code their games to take advantage of 3D. Nvidia has an innovative answer to this: as games are already coded in three dimensions to give them virtual depth on the screen, its 3D Vision kit unlocks the 3D view inherent in many current PC games.
