The Intel and Nvidia CEOs both still say that Android is the OS to watch on tablets and as prices come down and manufacturers standardize on specs, it'll get a lot better. We're still waiting for the Google reference design tablet that we talked about in episode seven.
Turns out that if you've rooted your phone, you're blocked from using Google's new Movies for Android service. Google's response was that rooted users could, in theory, dig in to their phones, grab rented or streaming movies and in turn, pirate them. Lame.

Acer's first Android tablet, the A500, is an impressive showing from a raw specs perspective. It's got a dual-core 1GHz processor, a gig of RAM and 16GB of internal memory, expandable via microSD card. Its 10-inch capacitive touch screen is responsive and reasonably bright. Acer has kept its modifications to Android to a minimum, which is a good thing. That said, we'd still rather see stock Android with few if any modifications. If it ain't broke, as the old saying goes.
On the build side of things, we're a little less than impressed. The tablet feels like it may have been a little rushed in that phase of the R&D. That and / or less expensive materials were used in the construction in an effort to keep the price down, which Acer has succeeded in doing. The Acer Iconia A500 goes for $450; $50 cheaper than the base level iPad.

We waited a while to do so, but we finally got hands on with the Motorola Atrix. Better yet, it travelled with us for a week so we could really get an idea of how it functioned in the real world. A capable dual-core smartphone, the Motorola Atrix has a 4-inch "qHD" 960x540 pixel screen; close to the 960x640 resolution of Apple's Retina display, though on a bigger screen. Motorola calls it qHD or quarter HD.
While the Atrix on its own is a pretty sweet smartphone (shame about Motoblur running atop Android), it's also a new category of sorts. Next episode, we'll take a look at the Lapdock and HD Dock accessories that turn the smartphone into the CPU for a whole mobile and home computing experience called Webtop.

The HTC Incredible S (S710a) is an impressive smartphone running HTC Sense atop Android 2.2. While Sense is a great UI and really sets HTC's offerings apart from other Android smartphones, there are a few things missing. Most notably, an apparent way to set a lock code or pattern lock for your phone.
That issue aside, the Incredible S is a pretty beefy Android smartphone. The star of the show is a 4-inch touch screen and 8MP camera with 720p video recording. On the spec side, we get a 1GHz processor and 768MB of RAM to push things long.

The HTC ThunderBolt is a capable smartphone despite its single core processor. Running an updated version of the HTC Sense interface, the fact that it's running Android 2.2 is easily forgiven. We're not huge fans of manufacturers (or especially carriers) messing with Android and hence delaying the update path, but with the Sense interface, it's worth the trade-off. The ThunderBolt has a nice bright 4.3-inch screen, an 8MP camera with 720p video recording capability. It's an LTE 4G phone and the difference between it and 3G phones is apparent.

Dual core has been the talk of the show. Kyocera goes one better and offers dual screens. We love the concept and at first blush, it looks like it's been well implemented on the Echo. What looks like a standard candybar phone splits in two with a solid feeling hinge mechanism to offer twice the screen real estate. Standard Android apps work as normal. Apps optimized for the Echo's split screens though open up entirely new possibilities. The first apps to really take advantage of the new possibilities opened up by opening up the split screen are games.
