Anyone that looks at the current Android tablet landscape would be forgiven for thinking its chaotic. It is. The Intel and Nvidia CEOs both still say that Android is the OS to watch on tablets and as prices come down and manufacturers standardize on specs, it'll get a lot better. We're still waiting for the Google reference design tablet that we talked about in episode seven.
Turns out that if you've rooted your phone, you're blocked from using Google's new Movies for Android service. Google's response was that rooted users could, in theory, dig in to their phones, grab rented or streaming movies and in turn, pirate them. Lame.

Acer's first Android tablet, the A500, is an impressive showing from a raw specs perspective. It's got a dual-core 1GHz processor, a gig of RAM and 16GB of internal memory, expandable via microSD card. Its 10-inch capacitive touch screen is responsive and reasonably bright. Acer has kept its modifications to Android to a minimum, which is a good thing. That said, we'd still rather see stock Android with few if any modifications. If it ain't broke, as the old saying goes.
On the build side of things, we're a little less than impressed. The tablet feels like it may have been a little rushed in that phase of the R&D. That and / or less expensive materials were used in the construction in an effort to keep the price down, which Acer has succeeded in doing. The Acer Iconia A500 goes for $450; $50 cheaper than the base level iPad.

We waited a while to do so, but we finally got hands on with the Motorola Atrix. Better yet, it travelled with us for a week so we could really get an idea of how it functioned in the real world. Motorola calls it qHD or quarter HD.

Dual core has been the talk of the show. Kyocera goes one better and offers dual screens. We love the concept and at first blush, it looks like it's been well implemented on the Echo. What looks like a standard candybar phone splits in two with a solid feeling hinge mechanism to offer twice the screen real estate. Standard Android apps work as normal.
