- You can replace the optical drive in a notebook computer but in many cases it will be tricky. Getting another drive that fits your model is hard enough, but finding one where the bezel lines up is next to impossible.
- Fortunately, there are external solutions such as the LaCie USB 2.0 Portable Slim 6x Blu-ray player. This is a handy product that is lightweight and easy-to-use.
- This particular drive connects to your computer via a USB cable. While the device does have a port for a power adapter, it can get all of its power through USB. If your USB port is not supplying enough power you can also get USB power adapters that plug into the wall.
- Next, you'll need to install software to use the drive. Most drives will come with software included, though you can get software such as Cyberlink Media Suite 9 elsewhere.
- It's important to note, as we did in other episodes, that Blu-ray movies require both your video card and display to be HDCP compatible. If they are not, then the easiest thing to do is to buy another notebook as replacing these components can be costly.
- Notebooks, such as the Acer Aspire 5745DG, already have compatible displays and video cards and are capable of displaying in HD resolution.
