Backing up Windows XP before you reinstall

You're going to be very happy with your nice, fresh, "clean install" of Windows XP. I'm pretty sure about that. I'm also very sure that you won't be happy if you forget to backup your photos, or music, or documents, or program data. This segment helps you get a handle on things to backup and things you don't want to forget. Trust me on this.

show notes

- By default you should always have backups.

- If you don't have a backup program here are a couple of excellent ones you can use:

- Download
Image for Windows NOW!

- Download
SyncBack SE NOW!

- Download
Macrium Reflect NOW!

- If you don't have backups you'll want to make them NOW. If you have enough disk space backup your programs and associated data.

- If you don't have enough disk space be sure to backup the DATA. You can always reinstall the program and put the data back in.

- Don't forget your My Documents folder.

- Don't forget your pictures and music.

- Be sure to take Desktop items and Favorites.

- To get these click Start and then Programs, then Accessories, and then Windows Explorer.

- In Windows Explorer click on drive C and look for the Documents and Settings folder.

- In this folder will be a unique folder for each user like Administrator, All Users, Michael, Doc, Bill, Mary, etc.

- Take what you need and want from these folders.

- Don't forget your Internet Bookmarks! You can use the program Xmarks to backup and synchronize bookmarks. Or...

- You can export your bookmarks from any browser. In Firefox just click Bookmarks then Organize Bookmarks.

- Select the bookmarks you want, then click Import and Backup and then select Export HTML.

- Take the BOOKMARKS.HTML file that's created in your backups.

- Don't forget your XP product key.

- THINK about the things you need and use.

- Here's the list you see in the tutorial for reference.

- Backup, backup, backup.
