- Sign into your Google Adwords account.
- Google AdWords allows you to know how many people click on your ads, but they don't let you know how long they stay on your site.
- To find this out you need to setup an analytics account with any of the analytics systems like Google Analytics (see Labrats show on Google Analytics and how it works).
- To know exactly which ad is driving people to the site and keep them staying the longest, you need to modify the destination URL a little.
- Go into the campaign and down to ad groups.
- Hover over a specific ad and click the pencil tool to edit the ad.
- Go to the destination URL.
- At the end of the destination add the following text:
?ref=adwords&campaign=CAMPAIGN NAME HERE&adgroup=AD GROUP NAME&ad=NUMERIC VALUE
- Note that there can be no spaces in the URL name.
- Click save.
- Apply an almost identical format to each add altering the numeric value at the end of each string so you know which ad is giving you better results.
- Use these addresses with your analytics.
