Often computers come with multiple "drives." Sometimes these
are in the form of card readers, CD drives, DVD drives, and so on. The
system will often assign drive letters randomly. However, you can go in and choose the drive letters you want.

Show Notes

Despite our headline (which is rather amusing, if we do say so ourselves) do not change the drive letter of any drive that you actively install or run programs from.

To change the letter associated with a drive on your computer:

- Click on Start, then on Settings, then click on Control Panel.

- In Control Panel double-click on Administrative Tools.

- In Administrative Tools double-click on Computer Management and in Computer Management, under Storage, click on Disk Management.

- Keep in mind NOT to change the drive letter of any active drive where you install programs. Windows writes the location information to the Registry so changing a drive letter in that case would result in Windows not being able to find the programs.

- It is perfectly fine to change the drive letters of any removable media like CDs, DVDs, USB thumb drives and the like.

- Find the drive you want to change and right-click.

- Select Change Drive Letter and Path and click.

- Click Change and select the drive letter you want from the drop-down list of available drive letters.

- A warning will come up alerting you to the fact that changing drives that are actively used to run programs is a bad idea. If you're sure the drive is OK, click Yes.

- Click OK and you're done.
