In order to prep your iPad to use as your main machine, you're going to need a few apps. High-end applications like Photoshop or video editing software will be almost impossible to replace as the iPad and iPad 2 lack the resources to do those tasks at a professional level. Despite this drawback, your iPad should be able to accomplish most tasks.
Tasks like browsing the web and checking email are obviously easy to do on your iPad. There are also apps for document editing, music creation and more.
Pages is available on the App Store from $9.99. As you'd expect, this allows you to edit and format text and is compatible with Word documents. If you want to manipulate Excel files, Numbers is also available for $9.99. This takes care of all your spreadsheet needs.
For the musically inclined, GarageBand is a stripped-down version of the Mac software and allows you to create your own songs. To see a series on how to use GarageBand, click here. For video creation there's iMovie, once again a stripped-down version of the Mac software. This gives you the ability to edit and share movies, and you can see the series on how to use iMovie here.
If you're going to be sharing files between computers, you may want to consider Dropbox. This is a free download that allows you to download and upload files via your Dropbox account.
More apps are available depending on what you want to use your iPad for so feel free to browse the App Store to find what's best for you.
