For Windows to work best and for it to be as secure as possible, you need to make sure you always have the latest updates. Microsoft releases fixes for security vulnerabilities, along with new device drivers and other system tweaks. Updates are free for registered Windows installs.

- Go to the Start menu and select Control Panel.

- In the search box, type in "update."

- Click on the link to turn automatic updating on or off.

- Select from the available options including the time you'd like updates to be downloaded and whether you'd like to be notified and asked before downloaded updates are installed.
