Connecting your wireless printer

Pt. 1 of 4 | 2:54 |

How do I print wirelessly

Tuesday August 23, 2011
In our first episode of this four-part series on how to set up wireless printing in your home, we'll explain what you need to get started. The two most important (and most obvious) components will be a functioning home network and a printer capable of connecting wirelessly. You'll also need to have your network password as without it you won't be able to connect your printer.

The most convenient thing about wireless printing is having the ability to print anywhere in your house from a mobile device, such as a laptop, tablet or smartphone. Since many people might not even have a desktop computer anymore, wireless printing has become even more important.

First, in order to print you're going to need to have access to a Wi-Fi signal throughout the home. You might find that having your wireless modem set up at the top of your house might mean you get little or no signal in the basement, so be aware of placement issues. Next, you're obviously going to need a printer that supports wireless printing.

In our case, we used the Lexmark Genesis S815. The setup procedure for this printer is likely similar to the setup procedure for other similar wireless printers. During the initial process, you'll enter things like your region and the time. Along the way, you'll be asked to connect to a Wi-Fi network. Follow the steps, find your network and enter the password, if necessary. Once it's connected to your network, you should be able to detect it from other devices on the network such as desktops, laptops or what have you.

One other thing we'll mention is that it is often a good idea to print a setup page. Often, you'll be asked if you want to do this and we recommend doing so and keeping the page for reference so that you'll have access to it for additional information whenever it's needed.
