The remote that comes with the Boxee box is handy but isn't ideal in low-light conditions. If you want another option and you own an iPhone, you can download the Boxee remote application so that you can control your Boxee box from your iPhone. If you made your own Boxee unit, then this might be a necessity as you won't have a remote available.

Keep in mind that the Boxee remote app will drain your iPhone's battery while active. You can power it down to save battery but this means that when you want to use it again, you'll need to power it up which can take some time.
While it is also possible to use a wireless mouse and keyboard, this is less than ideal as you'll want somewhere to put those things once you're done using them and both need a relatively flat and stable surface to use.

on your iPhone, search for Boxee remote. Install the software and open it once you're finished. Keep in mind that your iPhone will need to be on the same network as the Boxee box. There are two ways to use the Boxee remote app, one uses the on-screen buttons like with the remote, and the other is a gesture based mode that allows you to navigate by gliding the Boxee logo around the screen.
