Most of us get in an occasional rut when it comes to listening to music. We tend, by nature, to listen to many of the same things over and over again. Now you can get out of that rut by creating Smart Playlists in iTunes using criteria you dictate, but that iTunes controls. The result? A playlist that really is smart and always changing.

Show Notes

- In iTunes click File then New Smart Playlist.

- When the dialog opens you want to define some rules that iTunes will use to pick songs.

- You have a large range of criteria to pick from with things like Genre, Rating, Kind, Last Played, and many more.

- As you create your rules be sure to check the options that are available. For example you can say Rating IS three stars or Rating is greater than three stars.

- Decide if you want to limit the size of your Smart Playlist by number of songs, GB, MB, hours, or minutes.

- Decide how you want those items selected. For example by genre, artist, random, and so on.

- Make sure Live updating is checked. This will make your Smart Playlist change as you add new content to your iTunes library.

- When you're satisfied click OK.

- Give your Smart Playlist a name and it will fill with songs based on your criteria.

- You now have a Playlist that will change as you add and remove music from your library. A truly Smart Playlist.
