Creative Commons licensing

As your Flickr photostream grows, it's important to take a look at how you're allowing others to use your photos. In this episode of our Flickr series, Molly McDonald explains the different licensing allowances you can put on your photos and explains what they all mean.

- On the Flickr site click on the pull-down menu beside Explore and choose Creative Commons to set the credit and sharing requirements for photos in your stream.

Licensing types

  • Attribution: People can copy, distribute and display your photos if they give you credit as the photographer.

  • Noncommercial:People can copy, distribute and display your photos, but only for non-commercial purposes.

  • No Derivative Works: Others can copy and freely distribute and display your photos but only as they appear; no dirivitive works (i.e. altering a pic, using part of a pic) are allowed.

  • Share Alike: Allows others to do just about anything they want with your photos, so long as they offer them up with Share Alike licensing too.
