Extra features of GPS units

GPS devices do get you from point A to point B but many have additional features that can help you out in your travels. For example, most GPS devices will allow you to view what are called Points of Interest. These can range from hotels to restaurants to parking and more. Just tap one of these options to get turn-by-turn directions. This can be a great help if you find yourself in an unfamiliar city.

Many GPS devices also act as speakerphones. Since many regions now have

handsfree laws

that make it illegal to hold a phone or work with a device like a GPS, this feature can come in handy. Once you link your GPS with your phone via Bluetooth, you can start receiving calls through your GPS and hear them over the GPS speakerphone.

Some GPS units have SD card slots as well. Many devices use these slots to

transfer map data

into the GPS maps, but some also can use these for media playback. This feature can be handy if you want to keep the kids entertained in the back with music, video or pictures, but shouldn't be used if it's a distraction to driving. Likewise, some GPS units can even

take geotagged photos

using an onboard camera, but you wouldn't want to try snapping shots while on the highway.

There are also GPS devices that have a voice recognition feature. While this may not work well in noisy environments or with the windows rolled down, it can save you some time if you can get it to work for you.
