Focus Spotlight searches on your Mac

Spotlight is great for finding just about anything on your Mac. You can find documents, text inside of documents, graphics, songs and more. Sometimes you may need to focus your Spotlight search to hone the results. This is when you need to move your search to a full Spotlight search window for better results.

- In Finder click on File and then click on Find. This will bring up Spotlight.

- In the window that opens you have several areas where you can specify exact criteria.

- Under Search in Spotlight you can specify the entire Mac, a particular user, or sections that are shared.

- You can also specify if you want to look at the Contents of a file or for a file name.

- The first drop-down lets you define search parameters like last modified date, last opened date, created date and so on.

- The next drop down lets you specify the type of file like Applications, Documents, Folders, Images, PDFs, and the like.

- By changing your search criteria the search window automatically fills up with all files that meet the current criteria.

- You can expand or narrow your search as needed.

- Searches can also be saved for later use.
