Folders, labels and filters

Gmail is different from most other email clients as it uses labels instead of specific folders. This allows you to file an email in more than one category where typically, email clients will only allow messages to appear in one folder. Here, we'll look at ways you can interact, organize and filter your Gmail to take control of your inbox.

To create a label

- Click on Edit labels under the Labels category on the left hand side of the Gmail window. Type in a name for your new label and click Create.

To create a filter

- Click on the Create a filter link beside the search bar at the top of the Gmail window.

- Enter the information you want Gmail to use to filter email. For example, inputting the kids' email addresses and setting up a label called Kids will filter all their email into this one folder.

Interacting with email messages

- In your inbox, click on the star icon beside the sender name to star an email.

- When reading email, use the pull-down menu on the right hand side of the email window to select whether to Reply to all, Forward or Filter, among other options.

- Use the search bar at the top of your inbox to quickly search your inbox. You can search by sender, subject or words that appear in the email you're looking for.
