In our last episode on

GPS technology

, we'll tell you some other things you can do with your

GPS device

besides

plotting routes

through the urban jungle. If you've got a

hand-held GPS device

, you can use it to go geocaching, which is like a

GPS-powered treasure hunt

. You can also access

location-based services

like

Facebook Places or Foursquare

if you have

GPS on your smartphone

Show Notes

While

vehicle navigation

is the primary purpose of GPS devices for most people, GPS technology has become a part of our lives in other ways as well. Services like Foursquare or Facebook Places use GPS technology to allow you to let people know where you are and share your activities with others. Another recreational activity that uses

GPS is a game called geocaching

.

Geocaching is slowly growing in popularity and involves one person hiding an object, referred to as a cache, somewhere outdoors for another person to find later using a GPS device. Usually the cache consists of a waterproof container with one or more trinkets inside along with a log book. These caches are often well off the beaten path, such as off of hiking trails. Google geocaching to find out more.

GPS devices are also used for location-based services. If you have a smartphone with GPS functionality, you'll be able to use your phone to

see local businesses and restaurants

, and possibly even find coupons for them. Once you're there, you can use another service to check in to your location online so your friends will know where to find you, or possibly so you can unlock rewards and receive discounts.
