Growl has been notifying Mac users of new mail, instant messages, completed downloads and much more for quite some time. It's now available for Windows but it was born and continues to shine on the Mac.

- Growl installs as a Preference Pane on the Mac.

- Open System Preferences by clicking on the icon or clicking on the Apple menu and selecting System Preferences.

- On the General tab you can have Growl start when your Mac starts and show an icon in the menu bar.

- If you click on Applications you can see all the applications using Growl.

- Highlight a program and click Configure.

- You can change the Notification and it's Application settings.

- Under Display Options you can highlight a style and click Preview.

- The style of the notification will appear on the screen so you can see how it looks.

- You can have notification sent by SMS, put in iCal, and more.

- Growl can even listen to network activity and send notifications.
