record from a microphone

for

recording acoustic instruments or recording voice

. In this episode we'll show you how to

plug a microphone into your iPad

so you can

make your own recordings

and we'll also show you how to

Show Notes

In this episode, we plug in the Blue Mic Yeti Pro microphone through a powered USB hub and then through the

iPad Camera Connection Kit

into the iPad. The Yeti Pro is a good choice because it's a high-quality microphone for

recording instruments or voice

and because it has a microphone jack at the bottom for listening in on what you're recording.

Go to the Instruments window and then to Audio Recorder. Here, you'll see a VU meter that allows you to see your audio levels and whether you're recording too loud. As with the Guitar Amp instrument, you'll have to turn the monitor on in order to hear what you're recording. Once you hit record, you'll have access to some effects that you can turn on that allow you to distort your voice in different ways.

Another way to record input from a microphone is to use the Sampler from the Instruments menu. This allows you to take input from the microphone and

change the pitch, playback speed

and more. Make sure new sample is selected and then hit the start button. Once you've recorded what you want, you can hit the stop button and you'll see a keyboard appear. Tap these keys to alter the pitch of your sample.

You'll also see the waveform of your recording in the upper-right where you can easily crop and edit it by tapping trim. You can also tap the loop button to play your recording back as a loop or tap rev to hear it in reverse. Tap tune to see slider bars for easy tuning including one coarse tuning bar and one bar for fine tuning. If you click shape, you'll be able to change the attack and release times, affecting when the sound comes in and when it fades out. If you don't like any of the edits you've done, you can easily tap revert to undo the changes that you've made.

To save the sample you've been working on, first click on my samples. You'll see two columns with the right showing your

sample library

and the left showing the sample that you're working on currently. Tap add to library to make a keyboard appear which you can use to enter a name for and save your file. This sample will now be available in your samples menu for use in other projects.

You should consider contacting technical support from Samson and/or check the Apple Forums.
