A Beginner's Guide to Ubuntu

Tuesday June 9, 2009
One of the many benefits of Ubuntu Linux is that it

requires far less system resources

than say Windows Vista. That means that Ubuntu can run even on computers that are much older. Ubuntu doesn't need as much RAM, doesn't need as fast a processor, and doesn't eat up as much disk space.

Download Ubuntu and follow along with this tutorial series

- Ubuntu demands much lower system specifications to run than does Windows Vista.

- While

Ubuntu's system requirements

are low, Xubuntu, a re-working of Ubuntu, demands even fewer system resources and can run on older hardware.

- Ubuntu makes it possible to keep older computers in service much longer while still providing top performance.

- Minimum system requirements for Ubuntu are:

  • 700 MHz x86 processor

  • 384 MB of system memory (RAM)

  • 8 GB of disk space

  • Graphics card capable of 1024x768 resolution

  • Sound card

- Requirements were obtained from Ubuntu Web Site

- Minimum system requirements for Windows Vista are:

  • 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

  • 1 GB of system memory

  • 40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space

  • Support for DirectX 9 graphics with:

    • WDDM Driver

    • 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)

    • Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware

    • 32 bits per pixel

  • DVD-ROM drive

  • Audio Output

- Requirements obtained from Microsoft Web Site

- When it's a contest of

system requirements Ubuntu

wins hands-down.
