If you've used DOS and Windows you're probably well aware of

drive letters

. Under Windows everyone has a

C: drive

. Other operating systems like Unix, Linix, and Mac don't use drive letters. Here's a little background information on

what drive letters are and why Windows uses them

- You can read about Drive Letter Assignment on Wikipedia.

- Drives A and B are reserved for floppy drives.

- Drive letters range from A to Z. There is no drive AA or QQ.

- You can't have two drives with the same letter.

- It's generally okay to change the drive letters of drives that work with removable media.

- This includes things like floppy drives, ZIP drives, CDs, and DVDs.

- It's not recommended to change the

drive letters

of drives where you have intentionally installed software.

- The Windows Registry records the location of such programs and if you just randomly change the location Windows, won't be able to find the program.
