Many hardware products today are "

plug and play

" also called UPnP for "

Universal Plug and Play

." Not all devices are, however, which is why Windows gives you an easy way to add such devices.

Show Notes

- Click Start, then Settings, and then double-click on Control Panel.

- In Control Panel click on Add Hardware.

- The wizard will tell you that if you have a CD from the manufacturer that you should click Cancel.

- If you don't have a CD or floppy disk, click Next.

- Windows will search for any new devices.

- It will then ask you if the new hardware is connected.

- The best policy is always to connect the hardware to the computer before running the Add Hardware wizard.

- If the hardware is connected click Yes.

- Windows will show you a list of devices it thinks might need installing.

- Select your hardware from the list and click Next.

- Windows will find a driver and when it's done, will let you know if the device is working properly.

- Click Finish and you're done.

- If Windows doesn't find a driver you can always do a search for the manufacturer of the hardware.

- Most hardware manufacturers have software and drivers available for download.
