Boot order

refers to which device your computer looks at first when you first power it on. This order is established in the

CMOS or BIOS settings

in your computer. You can decide to

make a USB key the first boot device

or slightly

speed up your computer's boot time

by telling it to look on the disk that contains your operating system first. Here's

how to easily change your computer's boot order

. It will also allow you to

boot from a CD or DVD

if you need to reinstall an operating system or run diagnostics on a misbehaving PC.

Show Notes

- The

boot order

in most modern computers is configured at the factory.

- Possible boot devices include Drive A, Hard Drive, CDROM, DVD, and USB.

- In order to use a restore disk or reinstall a version of Windows you need to have the CD-ROM as the first boot device.

- Some users will put the hard drive as the first

boot device

in order to speed up the

boot sequence

by a few seconds.

- You can't hurt anything in the BIOS or CMOS settings.

- BIOS interfaces vary, but just remember key terms.

- You're looking to

change boot order, boot priority,

so you'll want to look for items that refer to "boot."

- To enter the CMOS / BIOS settings you need to tap a key just as your system starts.

- The key to press is always displayed on the screen and most often it is either DEL or F2.

- When you enter the BIOS settings remember what you're looking for.

- There may be a tab for "Boot" or it may be under Advanced Settings.

- When you find it simply make the change.

- When you're done press F10 which is almost universal for Save and Exit.

- In some cases you'll have to press ESC to save and exit.

- Now when you boot your computer will look at the order you've created.
