Starting with Windows XP there's a feature called

System Restore

. This

creates restore points

that preserve the state of your computer at a specific date and time. Some

restore points

are created automatically, but here's how you can

create a new restore point

yourself.

- Click on Start then on Control Panel.

- In Control Panel double-click on System.

- On the left-hand side click on System protection and then Continue.

- Click on the System Protection tab and click Create.

- Give your restore point a title that means something to you.

- Windows will give it a date and time.

- If you

recover Windows from a restore point

you will not lose any data. However, any programs you have installed since creating the restore point will be lost.

- Losing those programs is sometimes the purpose of using

System Restore

.

- We've created a System Restore point and are good to go.

- Note that some restore points are created automatically, like when you install software or devices.
