There are times when you have files that you want to protect. Files that you don't want others to have easy access to. For files like that you may want an encrypted disk. You have software right on your Mac that will let you make an encrypted disk in just minutes.

Show Notes

- On your Mac double-click on Finder.

- In the Sidebar click on Applications.

- In applications scroll down until you find the Utilities folder and double-click on that.

- When you're in the Utilities folder find Disk Utility and double-click on that.

- When Disk Utility opens click on New Image.

- Give the image a name and pick where to save it.

- Give the volume a name and determine what size you want it to be.

- Volume Format can be Mac OS Extended (journaled)

- Assign 128-bit AES encryption to make it secure.

- For Partitions have the disk have Single partition - Apple Partition Map.

- Image format should be read/write disk image then click Create.

- When prompted type in a secure password that you'll be able to remember. If you forget your password you will NOT be able to access your encrypted drive and lost passwords can't be retrieved. Type in the password twice and click OK.

- When the disk is finished being created you'll see the disk name on your desktop. Right-click and select Eject.

- Find your new, encrypted disk, right-click, and select Open.

- A dialog will come up asking for the password. I don't recommend having the keychain remember the password, but that's up to you.

- Enter the password and click OK. Your disk will appear on the desktop. Just double-click on it to reveal your files, add new ones, and so on.
