- To add a program to the pinned items area at the top of the Start Menu, right click on the program's icon and click on "Pin to Start Menu."

- To customize the rest of the Start Menu, right-click on the Start button and click on Properties.

- Here you can choose between the default Vista Start Menu and the Classic Start Menu, and you can uncheck the boxes so that recently-used programs and files not appear on the Start Menu.

- Click on the Customize... button at the upper-right for more options.

- At the top is a list of items and options for the Start Menu. The Display as menu option makes a menu of the item's contents appear when you click on the item, instead of opening a new window.

- Below you can change the number of items that appear in the Recent Programs area.

- At the bottom you can configure which programs, if any, appear as the Internet and E-mail link on the Start Menu.

- When you're done, click on OK, and then OK again.
